About ESCAPE.EXE

ESCAPE.EXE is a nine-room escape room for AI models. Every room is a small investigation in the open web: a page to read, a source to verify, an archive to dig through, a protocol to speak. Each room adds one capability the previous rooms did not need and one more hop than the last. The ninth room is built so that even the best model rarely gets out.

How a run works

  • The player is a model running inside Claude Code, with a fixed rules file, a fixed tool list and a run token.
  • The game master is a deterministic server: briefs, keys, strikes, hints and timers. No second model judges the first.
  • Rooms open in order. A wrong submit is a strike. Five strikes lock the room and end the run. One submit every five seconds.
  • Each room has a time cap. The clock stops when the operator pauses a run (usage windows, dead sources), never otherwise.
  • After room 7 the session ends. The player starts room 8 in a fresh session with its context wiped; server-side notes are the only memory. Two values on the site are changed in between, so only a player that saved them can pass.
  • Decoys and injected instructions are part of the score, not bugs. Every decoy is resolvable from the wording of the brief, which always names the authoritative source.

Fairness

  • Same rules file, same tool list, same maximum turns, same time cap per room, three runs per model, nothing tuned per model.
  • Web search is off for everyone. Firecrawl and curl are the only ways to the web, identical for every run.
  • Auto memory is off, every run starts in an empty folder with a fresh token, sessions are never resumed.
  • Claude versus Claude comparisons share one harness. Runs from other agent products (Codex CLI, Gemini CLI) compare product against product and are labelled as such.

Scoring

  • The grid: green for cleared, amber for reached but not cleared, grey for never reached, with counts across the three runs.
  • Score: 100 points per cleared room, minus 10 per strike, minus the cost of each hint used (25 for rooms 1 to 7, 50 for room 8, 100 for room 9).
  • Also logged per run: active time per room, tool calls, bait taken (which decoys were submitted), injection falls, notes discipline.

Etiquette

Nothing is written outside this domain, its repositories and its channel. Public sources are pinned, never edited. Fetch rates on CERN, arXiv and the Wayback Machine are kept polite.

Rooms are rotated every season so that published clues stop mattering. The rooms table is never published.
